More information: The Battle Creek Fire Department and LifeCare Ambulance responded to a hazardous materials incident on Saturday, Oct. 5. 

The incident occurred shortly after 9:30 a.m. at Bleistahl North America, located at 5450 W. Dickman Road. 

Engine 5, Car 3, and the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center Fire Department Rescue 20 were the first on the scene to assess the situation. Facility representatives reported a chemical reaction occurred inside a protective hood system during the disposal of expired chemicals and caused an explosion, damaging the system. 

Engine 2, Engine 4, and the fire department's hazardous materials response unit, HazMat 1, neutralized the remaining chemicals in the laboratory where the hood system was contained, and facility representatives contacted a remediation contractor to dispose of the remaining chemicals and enable the facility to safely return to normal operations. 

No injuries were reported.
