The First Tee Program

First Tee Kids
The First Tee of Battle Creek
is a junior golf program at Binder Park Golf Course. Boys and girls, ages 7 - 17 are welcome to join the fun and experience golf First Tee- style. The First Tee of Battle Creek was established in 2001 as a local chapter of The First Tee, an international nonprofit youth development organization. Nationally, The First Tee has touched the lives of more than nine million youth through programs that teach life skills and leadership through the game of golf. Here in Battle Creek, we deliver three core programs that build and complement each other, with age appropriate curriculum led by adult mentors in an ideal setting. Offsite programs encourage participation in the more intensive May-Life Skills Experience program conducted at our Learning Academy, located at Binder Park Golf Course. Students can learn life skills that can improve high school graduation rates, community participation and success in adulthood, and reduce childhood obesity. Adult mentoring is a key component of all our programs.

Mission
To impact the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf.

Our Programs
  1. The First Tee Life Skills Experience Program: held in May - September, teaches skills like how to set goals, manage emotions, make decisions and work well with others. Young people learn meeting and greeting skills and to appreciate diversity.
  2. The First Tee National School Program: trains physical education teachers in local k-5 classes, who in turn teach their students basic golf skills, life skills and healthy habits. The program promotes character education through the nine core values of golf: respect, confidence, courtesy, responsibility, perseverance, sportsmanship, judgment and honesty.
  3. The Target Outreach Program: a structured "try-it" activity conducted at area schools and community events introducing young people to golf and our organization.

Program Objectives

  1. To help youth develop by teaching life skills and core values through the game of golf.
  2. To offer golf to those kids who do not normally have access to the game.
  3. To enhance existing and develop new partnerships within the community.
  4. To develop year-round programming to advance participant skills and improve academic achievement.
  5. To build a successful mentoring program.
